A meticulous, multi-million dollar restoration of a Florida architectural landmark has erupted into a bitter public dispute, pitting the current homeowners against preservationists dedicated to the architect's legacy.
The residence, known as the "Milam House," was originally designed by famed modernist architect Paul Rudolph in the early 1960s. Its current owners embarked on a seven-year, $7 million project to revive the concrete and glass structure on the Atlantic coast, which had suffered from severe deterioration and water damage over decades.
The homeowners contend their work was a faithful and necessary reconstruction, preserving Rudolph's visionary design while making the house livable for a modern family. They replaced crumbling concrete, replicated original fixtures, and updated mechanical systems, arguing they saved the house from certain ruin.
However, the nonprofit Paul Rudolph Heritage Foundation has issued a scathing rebuke, alleging the work "destroyed" the architectural integrity of the historic property. The group claims that key Rudolph signatures, including specific spatial volumes, built-in furnishings, and textured concrete surfaces, were irrevocably altered or removed.
The conflict highlights the complex challenges of preserving modernist architecture, where material failure often necessitates difficult choices between strict conservation and adaptive restoration. With both sides claiming to be the true stewards of Rudolph's work, the debate over what constitutes salvation versus destruction remains unresolved.
