At 77 years old, real estate tycoon and "Shark Tank" investor Barbara Corcoran has built a staggering $100 million fortune, but her financial philosophy defies conventional wisdom. In a candid new interview, Corcoran admitted she "doesn't believe in saving money" and insisted that her willingness to spend freely is precisely what made her wealthy.
The self-made mogul explained that her approach to money runs counter to traditional advice about frugality and nest eggs. "I never saved a dime," Corcoran said. "People think you get rich by saving. You get rich by spending—spending on the right things." She elaborated that every dollar she earned was immediately reinvested into her business, her image, or opportunities that could generate more income. Instead of stashing cash in a savings account, she poured money into marketing, hiring talented staff, and expanding her real estate empire during the early days of her career.
Corcoran credited her high-risk, high-reward mindset for transforming her from a waitress with $1,000 in savings into a billionaire real estate mogul. She noted that saving money creates a "scarcity mentality" that prevents people from taking the bold risks necessary for massive success. "If I had saved, I would have been comfortable. But comfortable doesn't build fortunes," she said. Her strategy, she argues, forced her to stay hungry and creative, always looking for the next big move rather than resting on accumulated wealth.
While financial experts typically recommend saving 15-20% of income, Corcoran's unorthodox path has clearly worked for her. She now enjoys a lifestyle that includes multiple homes, luxury travel, and generous gifts to family. "I'm richer because I spend," she concluded, urging others to view money as a tool for growth rather than a security blanket.
