The owners of this Colorado property took an unusual approach to building their dream home: they started with two old sheds dating back to around 1900. Rather than tear them down, they made the weathered structures the heart of the house.
One shed became the primary suite, complete with a bedroom and bathroom that retain the original wood beams and rough-hewn character. The other shed was transformed into a bunkhouse for their son, giving him a separate space with its own entrance and a lofted sleeping area. The two sheds sit about 30 feet apart, and the main living area was built in the gap between them, creating a single flowing home that feels like three distinct volumes.
The design respects the history of the sheds while adding modern comforts. Large windows and sliding glass doors connect the interior to the surrounding landscape. The kitchen and living room occupy the new central section, with exposed steel beams and polished concrete floors that contrast nicely with the old wood of the sheds.
Outside, the property includes a patio and native landscaping that blends into the high desert terrain. The homeowners say they wanted a place that felt grounded in the past but worked for how they live today. By keeping the sheds, they preserved a piece of local history and gave their home a story that new construction could never match.
