On a windswept stretch of the Irish coastline, what once looked like a collapsing pile of stone and timber has been reborn as a striking family retreat. The structure, originally a ramshackle hut used for a sea-urchin farm, sat perched on the edge of a sheer cliff for decades, battered by salt spray and Atlantic gales. Most people saw a lost cause. One couple saw a challenge.

They spent years navigating planning permissions and engineering hurdles before the real work began. The existing walls were too fragile to keep, so they reinforced the foundation with deep concrete piles drilled into the bedrock. The new design keeps the original footprint but adds heavy timber framing, triple-glazed windows, and a roof anchored with steel cables to handle the brutal weather. Inside, the space is warm and minimal, with exposed wood, soft lighting, and large panes that frame the endless ocean view.

The couple did much of the finishing work themselves, from sanding the floors to installing the kitchen cabinetry. The result is a home that feels both rugged and serene, a place where the roar of the sea is a constant companion rather than a threat. For them, the project was never about luxury. It was about proving that even the most inhospitable spot can become a shelter, if you are willing to work with the land instead of against it. The hut is gone, but its spirit remains, now standing strong against the tide.
