A federal judge has given the green light to a landmark settlement that will unlock 2,800 new housing units for people with disabilities across Chicago over the next ten years. The plan, approved on Friday, was met with praise from disability advocates who have long pushed for more accessible and integrated living options in the city.
The agreement stems from a lawsuit that argued Chicago had failed to provide enough housing alternatives to nursing homes and other segregated settings for residents with disabilities. Under the settlement, the city will invest in building and subsidizing units that meet accessibility standards, including features like roll-in showers, wider doorways, and lower countertops. The units will be spread across various neighborhoods, rather than clustered in a single area, to promote inclusion.
Supporters say the decision is a major step toward honoring the Americans with Disabilities Act, which guarantees the right to live in the most integrated setting possible. For many, it means a chance to move out of institutions and into communities where they can work, socialize, and live independently. The plan also includes funding for support services to help residents adjust to their new homes.
City officials have committed to a timeline and will report progress annually to the court. While some advocates argue the 2,800 units are not enough to meet the full demand, they called the settlement a historic first step. The judge's approval ensures the plan moves forward without further delay, bringing hope to thousands of Chicagoans who have waited years for a place to call their own.
