A real estate developer facing a civil lawsuit from a woman who claims he raped her in a bedroom at actor Michael B. Jordan's house in 2015 is requesting that a judge halt all proceedings. The developer argues the civil case should be put on hold while he appeals a separate criminal conviction from earlier this year.
The woman, whose identity has not been publicly released, filed the suit alleging the assault occurred at a party or gathering at the actor's residence nearly a decade ago. The developer was convicted in an unrelated criminal matter earlier this year, and his legal team now contends that the civil action should not move forward until the appeals process in that criminal case is resolved.
Attorneys for the developer filed a motion asking the court to stay the civil lawsuit, claiming that proceeding now would be premature and could prejudice their client. They argue that the outcome of the criminal appeal could have a direct bearing on the civil claims.
The plaintiff's legal representatives have opposed the request, arguing that the two cases are separate and that the woman should not have to wait years for her day in court. They maintain that the developer is attempting to delay accountability.
The court has not yet ruled on the motion. Michael B. Jordan has not been named as a defendant in the lawsuit, and the incident is alleged to have occurred at his home without his direct involvement. The case remains in its early stages.
